"The 'Black Book of Communism' describes the appalling process of 're-education' and
brainwashing of political prisoners in Pitești prison. A movement was formed there: the
Organization of Prisoners of Communist Beliefs, which was to "convert" the condemned to
the path of communism. The re-education consisted of four phases: "external disguise", i.e.
proving one's loyalty; "internal disassociation", where people were reported to have helped
the convicted in prison; "public moral disassociation", where prisoners were forced to mock
and defame their holiness (e.g. family, God, love). In the final stage, the candidate had to
