Both the GDR and the FRG considered they were the ones authorised to speak for themselves
on behalf of Germany. This led to many international and local complications, such as the
recognition of borders with the neighbours and signing of peace treaties. The mutual
recognition of the two states took place only in December 1972, when the agreement based on
relations between the GDR and FRG was signed. Less than a year later, both countries
became members of the UN.
